Gallbladder removal is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. The gallbladder is an organ located in the right upper region of the abdomen, beneath the liver. The gallbladder’s function is to store bile, which is produced in the liver and is required for the digestion of fatty foods.

Why Do People Need Gallbladder Surgery?

Gallstones are the most common reason for surgical gallbladder removal. Gallstones form when the levels of bile salts and cholesterol in the bile fluid are out of balance. These stones can cause inflammation by obstructing the gallbladder duct. Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder. We use an ultrasound to determine the presence of gallstones and inflammation.

Biliary dyskinesia is the second most common cause of gallbladder disease that necessitates surgical removal of the gallbladder. Biliary dyskinesia is characterized by a malfunctioning or paralyzed gallbladder. In cases of biliary dyskinesia, a PIPIDA scan will be performed to determine whether or not the gallbladder is functioning properly. Under certain clinical conditions, additional imaging such as a CAT scan or MRCP may be performed.

When the doctor determines that gallbladder surgery is required, the gallbladder is removed via a surgical procedure known as a cholecystectomy. The term cholecystectomy simply means gallbladder removal. Dr. Renfrow uses minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic or robotic surgery, where the entire procedure is done with very small incisions. These up-to-date techniques result in less pain, better cosmesis, and a lower risk of complications.

Patients usually spend one night in the hospital for observation before being discharged the next morning.
